Best Breakfast and Brunch Spots in Newport, RI

Going out for breakfast is one of my favorite weekend rituals. Lingering over steaming mugs of bottomless coffee, ordering decadent omelets or French toast, and maybe reading the paper or just chatting the morning away with no schedule to adhere to.  And if those bottomless coffees turn into bottomless mimosas – all the better!  From a simple breakfast to an eclectic brunch, here are the best places to start your day in Newport!

Corner Café

This is hands-down my favorite breakfast spot. The menu is extensive and delicious, and the atmosphere is cute and cozy, complete with a fireplace and comfy cushioned booths. From Portuguese Sweetbread French Toast to a traditional Irish breakfast, from unique and HUGE omelets to eggs benedict and pancakes, you are guaranteed to leave stuffed and satisfied. The also serve awesome coffee and espresso drinks and juice combos. And if you want to truly make it an “Irish” breakfast – they’re a BYOB establishment, so feel free to bring a little something to spike your beverage with!

Annie’s

Another BYOB spot and favorite of tourists and locals alike, Annie’s has been serving up breakfast to hungry Newporters for years. They are located on historic Bellevue Avenue next door to the Tennis Hall of Fame, and serve breakfast all-day, every day. Their menu includes all the basic breakfast staples, as well as an impressive selection of Benedicts and Omelettes.

Franklin Spa

With its unassuming exterior, you might never guess this is one of the best breakfasts in Newport – unless the crowd of people outside waiting for a table gives it away.  On any given day and any given season, both locals and visitors in the know flock to “the Spa” for bottomless coffee and hearty portions of all the classics, as well as some New England inspired specials like eggs benedict topped with lobster or the Portuguese Sailor, a breakfast sandwich made with eggs, chourico, and cheese on Portuguese sweet bread.

Atlantic Grille

While technically in Middletown, this surfer favorite is located just over the town line and across from Easton’s Beach (or First Beach as the locals call it). “The Grille” has a great breakfast menu including combo platters named after Newport’s famous beaches, for those that want a little taste of everything. The Surfer’s End (my personal fave!) for instance consists of two eggs, home fries, bacon, and a Belgian Waffle. They also serve huge omelets, several different types of eggs benedict, French toast, pancakes, and more, with plenty of daily specials to keep things interesting. In addition, they offer a full bar, so a tasty Bloody Mary or Mimosa is always an option when dining here.

Diego’s

Love Mexican and delicious cocktails? Then look no further than Diego’s for an amazing brunch experience. Located on Bowen’s Wharf in the heart of downtown Newport, this funky Mexican joint does breakfast on weekends only, but man do they do it right! Options include eggs benedict on a sweet Portuguese Bolo, a smoked salmon quesadilla, and a decadent breakfast burrito. There is also a $6 menu (with the purchase of a cocktail) that includes the Diego’s Breakfast Torta and Diego’s Huevos. Cocktail offerings include Bloody Marys, a “Man-Mosa” and various other morning-approved libations.
