Best Beaches in Portsmouth, RI

Going to the beach is one of the great ways to spend time during the summer months, to enjoy the sun and warm weather. Rhode Island, despite its small size, is known for its amazing beaches. Because of this, there are a lot of beaches to choose from in cities like Portsmouth. But what are the best beaches Portsmouth RI has to offer?

Sandy Point Beach

Sandy Point Beach in Portsmouth, Rhode Island is known as a popular beach among families. Sitting on the Sakonnet River, Sandy Point Beach has relatively shallow water that makes it a great place for swimming in the warm months. As a handicap-accessible beach that offers changing rooms, this is a great place for the whole family to go and enjoy a day. However, it should be pointed out that there are no dogs allowed at Sandy Point Beach and there won’t be any lifeguards on duty. So, make sure not to swim alone. Even with that, no one has ever regretted a day at Sandy Point.

Island Park Beach

A relatively small beach less than a half-mile long, Island Park Beach is known for its relaxing atmosphere and scenic views. A lot of people like to come to Island Park Beach for a romantic walk or to try and get some exercise, which makes it incredibly popular. Dogs are welcome here too, making it popular with locals. Like many beaches in Portsmouth and around the Sakonnet River, this is a bit of a rocky walk. However, a pair of sandals and some great local restaurants makes up for this.

McCorrie Point Beach

McCorrie Point Beach is a great local beach that people come to let their dogs swim and go fishing. The water is shallow here, which also makes it a great place to go swimming. In particular, McCorrie Point Beach is a great place for people to come and get more comfortable with swimming in the ocean. It’s a relatively easy swim, and is generally free from tourists. It is, however, worth pointing out that there are a lot of seashells here, so swim shoes are a good idea.

Teddy Beach

Set on a peninsula, Teddy Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches that Portsmouth has to offer. This state-owned beach is known for its views for fishermen, and the dogs that many locals like to take to Teddy Beach. Because it’s a state-owned beach, there are even lifeguards here, which makes it great for families who are looking for peace of mind in the ocean.
