Best Restaurants in Greenwich, CT
It is both a joy and a challenge to create a narrow list of the best restaurants in Greenwich; the city is home to so many fantastic culinary spots, it’s incredibly difficult to choose. This list is, of course, subjective – in writing it, I have tried to pick one or two spots for each popular “kind” of restaurant, based on region or style. Go forth and enjoy, perhaps starting with these and then exploring more on your own!
Pasta Vera is one of several delicious, authentic, elevated Italian restaurants in Greenwich and while we love them all, it’s just our personal favorite. They began serving the Greenwich community in 1986 and since then have strived to bring their customers the finest southern Italian cuisine. They use fresh, high quality ingredients and hand make their pastas every morning. With dinner specials rotating in every week, there’s always something new to try, but a staple choice for us is the Homemade Fresh Ravioli. We usually go for the spinach and cheese with creamy marinara version, but they also have a classic four cheese or a mixed wild mushroom with fontina cheese in a white wine mushroom sauce!
Bistro Versailles is one of the most popular restaurants in downtown Greenwich and is our personal pick for a French restaurant. As with the abundance of Italian restaurants, Greenwich is also blessed with a long history of Francophilia which has resulted in no shortage of wonderful French restaurants for locals and visitors alike. Bistro V, as it’s sometimes called, is known for being a cozy local hangout for breakfast and lunch, and for being the perfect spot for a romantic dinner date. Do not miss the Foi Gras Terrine with fig and wild Swedish lingonberry jam as an appetizer, or the Short Rib Bourguignon with mashed potatoes, pearl onions, and roasted carrots as an entree.
Douro offers an inventive approach to Mediterranean cuisine and utilizes the best of local and seasonal ingredients from natural products, and sustainable farms. Whether you need a spot for an intimate dinner or a joyous family meal, Douro is ready to accommodate you. Their menu stands on its own as a reason to visit, but the restaurant’s architecture is a beautiful bonus, having been originally built as a bank and trust by the same architect behind Grand Central Station. Order some rice balls and crispy, lemony artichokes topped with shaved pecorino and sea salt for the table to start! I can’t resist the Honey Spiced Chicken, a deceptively simple dish that is served with broccoli and roasted fingerlings.
Asiana Cafe has been offering Greenwich locals and tourists a taste of Asia for nearly two decades, specializing in Chinese, Thai, and Japanese cuisine. I usually start with their Dim Sum Club to try an assortment of small dishes, and then move on to the Peking Duck, which is roasted and served with scallions, steamed buns, and plum sauce.
The Ginger Man is our choice for where to get classic pub fare in Greenwich. Featuring a beautiful but low lit interior that evokes a traditional style tavern, the Ginger Man is known for its selection of beer, burgers, and hearty entrees. Here you can find Guinness Beef Stew or some killer fish and chips, but don’t miss their Pesto Mac & Cheese as an appetizer – it is made with cave-aged cheddar, homemade pesto, and topped with crispy breadcrumbs, and was voted Best Mac and Cheese in 2017 and 2018 by the Mac and Chili Festival.
