Two Can’t Miss Donut Shops in Mystic

Are you a donut fan? Don’t miss these two donut shops in Mystic!

Deviant Donuts

Deviant Craft Coffee & Donuts is a small-batch gourmet donut and craft coffee shop in the Olde Mistick Village. The donut side of things started as a pop-up shop several years ago at Vault Coffee but oday, the two have merged into one establishment. They pride themselves on making everything by hand – from the fillings, to the glazes, all the way up to the garnish. Each idea is carefully crafted and tested to assure the best possible quality.

It all started because they wanted to offer the classic coffee and donuts scenario that was inventive, trendy, and of course, fun and appealing for all ages. After spending months developing a brioche recipe they started brainstorming flavors. Today, they offer five varieties of donut: brioche, cake, gluten-sensitive, vegan, and croissant-donut hybrid they call the “crö-dö.” Wowza, definitely some of the best donuts in Mystic!

The donut flavors at Deviant change regularly, depending on the season. During Thanksgiving, they have had flavors like sweet potato pie, pecan pie, and grasshopper pie. Around Christmas, they have offered flavors like eggnog, apple cider mimosa, ginger molasses, and peppermint fritter. Because they are also a coffee shop, they have an extensive drink menu that includes classic coffee drinks, seasonal lattes, hot teas, and iced and blended drinks.

Young Buns Doughnuts

It’s simple at Young Buns: they make traditional and delicious donuts every day from scratch. Their team, which is lead by Sift Bake Shop’s Adam and Ebbie Young, begins each day at 3 a.m. making homemade yeasts, doughs, fillings, icings, toppings, and more. Each donut is hand-cut and hand-dipped.

They offer a daily set menu of nine traditional flavors, and also have seasonal flavors that rotate monthly. The nine traditional flavors are: chocolate frosted sprinkles, blueberry cake, vanilla cake with vanilla icing and streusel, seasonal jelly, cinnamon sugar, old fashioned, vanilla glaze, triple chocolate, Mystic cream with chocolate ganache and pistachios, rainbow sprinkle, and gluten-free cinnamon sugar.

“Doughnuts present their own challenge,” Ebbie explained, when asked about how Young Buns differs from their other venture Sift Bake Shop. “Consistency is important, of course, and everything happens all at once with donuts, whereas other pastries may take all day to craft. It’s a dance, and we’ve learned to get into the rhythm.”

As the business continues to grow and evolve, the Youngs are planning options for make-your-own donut kits or home-decorating kits or even full-size doughnut cakes, but their focus will remain on small batches of high-quality treats.

“We find what we do very rewarding, and we never take it for granted,” Ebbie said. “Like everyone, we’re looking forward to putting the pandemic behind us, but to keep delivering great doughnuts and great service for years to come!”

You should give Young Buns a try next time you’re in Mystic. These are for sure some of the best donuts in town!
