Daniel Potter Exhibit | Peace from Pieces

July 6, 2022 @ 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm

This month’s exhibit will feature local artist Daniel Potter! Head to the Hoxie Gallery from 5-7 pm Wednesday, July 6th to “Meet the Artist”. His pieces can be viewed in the Hoxie Gallery through the month of July during library hours.

About the exhibit:

“Peace from Pieces” is a show about recycling trash, or rediscovered treasure. From an ongoing collection of flotsam and jetsam from the local beach, interesting detritus, hoardings, and scraps from other projects, Dan has assembled and created a group of new friendsfun little sculptures to be given away, or sold, as worthy of great museums and shows like this one Surrounding these sculptures will hang a series of paintings, masks, and larger sculptures all by Dan, as selected and arranged by Marya Ursin, his wife and curator for 33 years.

About Daniel Potter:

Daniel Potter began creating sculpture and puppeting at the tender age of eight, and continued with these and with theatre while at the Putney School, Harvard College (AB, 1968), l’Ecole des Beaux Arts, and the Harvard Graduate School of Design (M. Architecture 1973). Dan’s primary area of artistic creation is welded or plasma cut metal sculpture, and painting, with a particular interest in assemblage, as can be seen in this show of pieces of detritus as moments of peace. His one man show at the Hoxie Gallery in Westerly, RI, is in July 2022. Dan is also a potter; his pottery, painted by Marya or by him, is shown and sold in Connecticut and New York. In 1976, he co-founded the Mystic Paper Beasts Theatre Company, which is a travelling mask theatre company. Currently, Dan is co-Director of the Company, for which he builds and paints masks, and performs in them in the pieces written, and directed by Marya Ursin. They have been commissioned to create new theatrical works for the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the Yale Art Gallery, the RISD Museum of Art, the Yale Museum of British Art, the Cambridge River Festival, NYC Downtown Halloween Parade, and the Mystic Aquarium, among others. Dan and Marya imagined, designed, and built the artist retreat space next to his studio in Ledyard, a light filled hexagonal space for dancers and actors, the Dragon’s Egg. Dan and Marya enjoy three shared daughters, Giselle Potter, Chloe Potter, and Ana (Ursin-Nichols) Tiwathia, and five grands, two cats, and a beautiful home.
