Best Burgers in Providence, RI

Sometimes the answer to life’s questions is a plate filled with burgers and fries. At least, that’s how it is for me. Whether you’re just craving a good old fashioned throwback to your adolescent years in a diner or you’re seeking an elevated version with unexpected flavor profiles, Providence has plenty of burger spots to choose from. These are just a few of our favorites!

The Abbey – Abbeys are a Christian monastery that acted as a center for governments and community in the Monastic period, and the monks who lived in them became some of the first experts in crafting time-consuming food products like cheese and beer to help generate income. Hundreds of them once populated the western world, but now only seven of them remain – so the owners decided to name their new bar in honor of those who helped perfect some of the things we love so much today. Our own Abbey, located right here in Providence, offers classic styles, like the Great American Burger (all-beef patty, special sauce, lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, and American cheese), alongside more adventurous options like the Havana (two patties with sliced baked ham, pulled pork, Swiss cheese, pickles, yellow mustard, on a French loaf). They also have a very customizable build-your-own menu, so you can partake in crafting your own perfect meal as well.

Harry’s Bar & Burger is such a staple in Rhode Island that you can find two right in Providence alone – the original location on Main Street, and another in the heart of Federal Hill on Atwells. Beloved by locals and passersby for its casual atmosphere and delicious sliders made from Hereford beef and served on toasted potato rolls. The MOAB (Mother of All Burgers) gets a lot of hype, and given that it’s a combination of hickory smoked bacon, portobello mushroom, and fried onion strings, that’s understandable. Pair your burger with a Hard Shake to make your meal that much merrier!

Chomp Kitchen and Drinks has recently been ranked #4 in a cross-country burger competition, and Rhode Island Monthly has named them as the state’s Best Burger. They’re known for their huge portions, liberal toppings, and unique ingredient pairings. We recommend either the Brisket Hash Burger, a beef patty topped with cheddar cheese, 24-hour smoked brisket hash, melted onions, and Korean bbq sauce, or the Crab Rangoon Burger, which is a beef patty topped with crab rangoon spread, crispy wonton chips, and duck sauce.

Haven Brothers Diner is one of the oldest food trucks in America, having been founded in the late 1800s as a horse-drawn lunch cart originally but now taking the form of a 1949 diner car. A time-honored tradition for locals and a must-go destination for tourists, Haven Brothers has been featured in film and television, and is the perfect place for a late-night burger with fries and a shake (they have dozens of flavors to choose from!).
